Go to Bill Williams Mountain and the Kaibab National Forest around it: that is where the tourism board points for the best fall color near Williams. Haven's own check shows peak foliage in Coconino County near Williams for October 12–18, 2026, a few days from now. This is for couples, small families and pet owners who want a short color outing from a walkable downtown base.
Key takeaways
Haven has verified peak foliage in Coconino County near Williams for October 12–18, 2026. As of October 9, that is days away. The tourism board says late September through October often offers the best leaf peeping, depending on weather and elevation.
Elevation matters. If one spot still looks green, a higher or lower stand may be turning.
The same tourism guide says some of the best leaf peeping is in the surrounding Kaibab National Forest and around Bill Williams Mountain. Golden aspens and colorful oaks against deep-green ponderosa pines define the local fall display, and it is close to town.
The USDA Forest Service describes the Benham Trail #38 as starting in ponderosa pine and oak thickets and climbing into mixed conifer forest on Bill Williams Mountain. Highland Grand Canyon Glamping, a Northern Arizona glamping operator, describes the mountain's slopes as a mix of oak and aspen, scenic in mid to late October, with short trails to park and walk.
That timing lines up with this year's expected peak. Search "Bill Williams Mountain trailhead" to find the starting point. The tourism board advises checking forest, road and fire conditions before you go, especially on unpaved routes.
The Williams Ranger District encircles the City of Williams, so you can be among the trees quickly. A few ways to take it in:
As the host, I would pick one or two stops rather than chase everything, and I would save the lake for midday.
Cataract Lake is a 2-mile drive from our house. Per the City of Williams, Cataract Lake County Park is a joint Coconino County and City of Williams park, open for day use. It has two ramadas, charcoal barbecues, horseshoe pits, a playground and restrooms.
The city also notes that Arizona Game and Fish stocks the lake regularly. Ramadas can be reserved in advance through the City of Williams Recreation Department, which is worth doing if you want a covered table for a larger group.
We are right downtown, steps from Historic Route 66, with free parking on the premises behind the house. That means you can do the color loop by car and walk to dinner afterward.
Our home allows 1 service animal or 2 small dogs under 30 lbs, with a one-time $100 nonrefundable pet fee. Confirm each trail's and park's pet rules before you head out, since I cannot speak for them.
The tourism guide lists Historic Route 66, the Grand Canyon Railway, Bearizona and the Kaibab National Forest among the top fall attractions. From our house, the Grand Canyon Railway is about a 5 minute walk, Bearizona is 5 minutes by car, Flagstaff is 35 minutes and the Grand Canyon is about an hour.
For more ideas, our post on Williams day trip pairings shows how to combine the train and wildlife stops.
If you need a place to stay in the middle of all this, The STaR Plus Collective has a one-bedroom house downtown that sleeps 4, with check-in from 4:00 PM and check-out by 11:00 AM.

Afternoons are mild and mornings crisp. Nights can fall into the 30s and 40s, with freezing conditions or an early dusting of snow possible later in the season, so bring layers.
