Overflow parking areas and boarding locations are shown on the Railway’s property map (map PDF).
On Polar Express nights (Nov–Dec), the Depot ticket counter posts extended hours (6:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m.), and Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time, per the Railway fact sheet (thetrain.com).
From our place downtown, we walk it. The Stay at Six•One•Four is about a 6‑minute walk to the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel & Depot—no parking hunt needed. If you do drive, you’ll have free on‑site parking behind the house.
When to arrive and how boarding works
Train‑only guests should arrive at least 1.5 hours before departure to pick up tickets and settle in; boarding begins 15 minutes prior, per the FAQs (thetrain.com).
Williams operates on Arizona Mountain Standard Time year‑round, so your train time won’t shift with DST changes, per the Railway fact sheet (thetrain.com).
Host tip: If you’re on the 5:30 p.m. departure, aim to be back at the Depot by 4:15 p.m.; for 7:30 p.m., arrive by 6:15 p.m. That rhythm has worked well for our guests.
What happens before and during the ride
Pre‑ride activities happen in the Polar Room: story time with Mrs. Claus runs 4:30–9:30 p.m., and photos with Mr. Claus run 3:30–9:30 p.m., per the Polar Express FAQs (thetrain.com).
On board, hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies are served while the story is read, per the official event page (thetrain.com).
If you’ve picked up tickets at noon, use the late afternoon to explore Route 66—there’s a grocery store 30 seconds from our door for any last‑minute warm layers or hand warmers.
Not all rail cars are ADA accessible; travelers should call 1‑800‑TheTrain at least 7 days prior for arrangements or note needs during online checkout, per the official page (thetrain.com).
Strollers can be parked by the Depot; space on board is limited to the vestibules between cars, per the FAQs (thetrain.com).
Bring the essentials you’ll use on the train—coats, hats, gloves, a small diaper/camera bag—and keep the rest at your stay.
Cold‑night prep for Williams’ elevation
Williams sits at approximately 2,105.9 meters (about 6,910 feet) above sea level, per NOAA’s station details for Williams (NOAA NCEI). At this elevation, temperatures can drop quickly after sunset in late fall/early winter.
Arizona remains on Mountain Standard Time all year—no Daylight Saving Time—so plan your evening accordingly, per the Railway fact sheet (thetrain.com).
Host tip: Dress in warm, breathable layers with closed‑toe shoes, plus hats and gloves for the platform and walk back.
